Selasie Out With Finger Injury

Reports reaching REBOUND via Panthers' captain Vincent Azan-Gbiok says forward, Selasie Gamedeku will be out for at least 5 weeks with an index finger injury. Talking to Selasie himself, he mentioned that the x-ray showed "the bone is turned some funny way". He's also expected to get a surgery to get the bone fixed very soon. He got the injury while playing in a pick up game two Sundays ago in Tema.

A photo of Selasie's fingers he sent to us

"This is a very big blow to us and that's one of the reasons we considered the Meme move considering we lack in size right now"; Vince's comments when asked about how much of an impact this injury has had on the Panthers team.

Hoops Opt Out

Hate them or love them; the Cape Coast Hoops were, yes! were one of the most exciting teams to ever watch in the Greater Accra Basketball League.

After about four years of being a force to reckon with in the Accra league, the management of the Cape Coast Hoops led by Claudius Thompson have decided not to register for the 2012 season which is scheduled to start on March 14 at Lebanon House. In a discussion with him, he mentioned a few reasons for their decision.

It all boiled down to funding!

A problem that almost every team in this league has to deal with. With the league remaining amateur; with no sponsorship / reward system whatsoever ever since its been running, it's becoming continuously difficult to participate in it taking into consideration the hustle and bustle of Accra and then game schedules.

It is quite plain that CCH is not in this plight alone. But then it's always a big deal when somebody walks away somewhat from the game of basketball and especially if that person or in this case an organization was a relevant piece in the league.

Memories of the excitement this team brought are countless; dunks upon dunks, good play after good play and talent after talent was displayed for free to us every week.

Like many of the things that happen in Ghana Basketball, this is just one more reason somebody has to do their jobs right!

Referees Wanted!

Mini Q & A with Referee Gasu
Gh basketball could use a couple more people like this man...trust me!
RGH followed up on the wall post he dropped our facebook page. It read like "Why is everybody shying away from basketball officiating? The Referees' Association badly needs a fresh injection of personnel and commitment!" and drew a couple of interesting suggestions.
This sounded like an urgent call for help from the man who's also the secretary of the referees' association.

So I called up Gasu to further explain what exactly he meant in the post(yea, I know it was as simple as it could be, but who knows, he might have meant more).

He started by describing how he himself got into officiating. "Certain things should have been institutionalized long ago, but as you know, our system is not the best and many of those things do not happen. So for some us when we wanted to be referees, we were taken through training by Mr. Iddrisu Gamel before we were made to start officiating. Along the way through our own initiative and interest in acquisition of more knowledge about the game we regularly read material from the internet and other sources."

When asked if he made the statement because of any impending referee course, he responded by saying that it was a personal initiative; which he knows his chairman will applaud. He went on to say that any interested person should apply to the referees association and he will personally aid the person through all processes that are required to make one a part of them. "We need new guys to inject some sought of competition among the refs, so that it becomes like it's done in soccer and other sports, if you do not perform well as a referee, you are not given any games to officiate. There's a lot of complacency among the refs because they realize there are no other options but them".

If interested why don't you pick a phone and call referee Gasu on 024 3835148 or find him on facebook as http://www.facebook.com/#!/bquarmyne or follow the refs on http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Basketball-Referees-Ghana/215237911848598

Update: Refs boycott GABL

According to the execs of the GABBA, all the issues and concerns that called for the referees boycott of the start of the L have been resolved.

"We will continue with the schedule from next week, and the matches not played this week will be moved to the end of the schedule and will now be the last matches to be played", Mr. Baafi said in a statement.

Report: Refs boycott GABL...

Lebanon House - Yes, the Accra L has been postponed again, thanks to nobody. After fans thought the long wait was over, their worst nightmare came to pass again.

The problems in the L as we all know, knows no boundaries. Certainly, this is one that needs urgent fixing in my opinion.

Referees did not show up on opening day of the 2011 GABL.

In a phone convo with Mr. Gasu, he said this was in protest for a couple of issues that they wanted the L's execs to fix before they'll commence officiating this year's L. "First of all we did this in support of a fellow ref" he said siting the Anani, Dougy incident that happened last season after the CEPS-Hoops game at the prisons' court. According to the decision taken by the disciplinary committee, Dougy was supposed to serve a ban as well as pay for the medical bills of Mr. Anani. The problem is, so far he has not fulfilled the latter part of the committees decision. An action that prompted Mr. Anani to personally opt out of officiating this year's L.

The other reasons being more technical, were related to the game involved schedule and local rules. The refs complain of receiving the schedule for this year's league just this past Monday, 7th March, a date they said was too close to the start of the L. The refs also complain of the non-attachment of the local rules to the schedule, and that they wish for it to be available before they can go on to officiate.

Mark These Dates!

Editor's picks for the year.Rivalries are like the air that sports survive on.

Finally the Accra league's schedule has been released by the GABBA. In any league they are always games fans look forward to, no matter how many times they occur in a lifetime. As much as fans of the NBA, including myself will like to watch other teams succeed, we continually yearn for a Celtics-Lakers final. And if you have been a fan of the Accra L, there are games you certainly wouldn't want to miss especially this year when it promises to be more exciting because of the divisions introduced.

The introduction of the divisions have certainly taken away some matches fans would have wished for. Who wouldn't want to see how CEPS pays TY back for what they did to them in the 2010 Thome Cabalan finals.

CEPS vs Warriors. March 9,4pm, Lebanon Hse.
No one should miss the first game of the season. This match up didn't leave up to expectation last season because the Warriors team was in a little bit of a mess getting to the end of the season due to the breaks. So we should get ready for a more interesting game on opening day!

Hoops vs Police. March 12, 4pm, Lebanon Hse.
Hoops won this match up last year with 2 points, look out for Police to come all out for their revenge.

Holy family vs Magic. March 12, 5pm, Lebanon Hse.
one point game in favor of Magic last season. A revamped Holy Family wouldn't take t likely against their Tudu based foes this time.

Kingdom Hoops vs Turbo Jets. March 18, 3pm, Prisons' court.
For sure this match is not here because of the jets, it made here because it marks the debut of the other "Hoops" team. let's see what they bring. Welcome Kingdom Hoops!

CEPS vs Police. March 18, 4pm, Prisons' court.
The two top security teams' battle for supremacy.

Fire vs Magic. March 19, 4pm, Lebanon Hse.
With both teams having Tudu backgrounds, an exciting game is assured.

Hoops vs Holy Family. March 19, 5pm, Lebanon Hse.
Pappoe, Djimate and co revenge their loss against Hoops with a new look HF dominated with Yotive expatriates.

Reformers vs Police. March 23, 4pm, Prisons' court.
With all the support on their side, we'll see if Reformers will be able to hand Police two losses in a row.

C.Y.O vs Tema Youth. April 1, 3pm, Lebanon Hse.
Hmm! You certainly don't expect C.Y.O to upset TY again, such feats don't happen in sports with this much frequency.

Warriors vs Hoops. April 2, 4pm, Prisons' court.
Arguably the best match of the 201 GABL. Ended 91-90 for Hoops. No matter who wins, get prepared for a thriller.

CEPS vs Magic. April 6, 4pm, Prisons' court.
Yes, this match made to the list. A match expected to be boring and look like a fixed one. Don't ask me why. find out!

Hoops vs Magic. April 16, 4pm, Prisons' court.
Coach C of Hoops regularly airs his dislike of this Magic team. he claims they should be way better. "They should be shooting lights outs, it's the same court they train on. Yet they never live to expectation".

CEPS vs Hoops. April 20, 4pm, Lebanon Hse.
EPIC ENCOUNTER!. Part 2. Please do not miss!.

Fire vs Magic, April 22, 4pm, Prisons' court.
Both teams have Tudu backgrounds, a possible in-house battle is expected.

Police vs Warriors. April 23, 5pm, Lebanon Hse.
Police will have definitely win this one. Warriors won the match up last season with some 9 points.

Tema Youth vs Panthers. April 27, 3pm, Lebanon Hse.
Accra East warfare. Even though TY are favourites, it will be interesting to see what those OKC-like Panthers have under their sleeves.

Talk of Referees; chairman's remarks

Just as expected, the issue of officiating came up again at the GABBA meeting held last Friday at Lebanon House. Some coaches and players as usual blamed officials for most of the mishaps on the courts.

GABBA chairman was of a different opinion.

He blamed the coaches, a side he seemed to be on alone. "The coaches need to be more professional in their activities and also make a conscious effort to educate their players about good behaviour during games rather than coming into games and starting arguments with referees" he said.

Mr.Baafi went on to remind the house that the Ghana basketball Association will soon hold a referees course for new referees to be trained and hold a refresher course for the existing ones.

When asked about the referees' course held at Burma Camp, he pointed out the fact that most of the guys went through the course to get the merit for promotions and not to really take up the task and provide their much needed service.

Something to make you go hmm! Part 2

Accra - The story about the women's national team trip to La Cote D'Ivoire and the comments it drew here continues to create ripples within the Ghanaian basketball community. The latest addition has come from none other than the chairman of the GABBA , Mr Benjamin Yaw Sakyi Baaafi, who also served as the manager for the team on the trip.

In a conversation with him this morning after his morning work out at Lebanon House, he made it clear that even though the women did not perform well at all, he was not happy with some of the comments that were made on the story especially the one from Gasu. Siting the fact that he (Gasu) is a referee and belongs to the Ghana basketball family and knows how difficult it is to get funding to do things for basketball in Ghana. He also mentioned how several individuals had to sacrifice their time and money before this trip could come on.

"The women went to play for them to gain qualification to the AfroBasket 2011 to be held in June 2011" he said in his statement. He also sited that the GBBA saw this as an opportunity for Ghana to get an easy qualification since Nigeria did not bother to show up because they had already qualified. As a result La Cote D'Ivoire has qualified for both the All African games and Afrobasket 2011.

The GBBA had a lot of problems in the preparation for the trip, most pertinent amongst them being finance. He said some players also failed to honor the calling to the team and others were not able to make it because of other important engagements they had during the period of the trip. "Anybody who has followed the league over the years knows that this wasn't the best women's team that could have been put together, but there so many issues that prevented the GBBA from putting together the best possible team", the team manager added.

He ended his talk by saying that the GBBA and all of its stakeholders are going to soon start active preparations for next year's trip to Mali.

FIBA Coaching Course Dairies

REBOUND Special Report : Coaching Course Diaries

REBOUND hits the road again with another exclusive. For the next eight days be assured of exclusive, detailed daily updates of the FIBA module 1 coaching course being held in Accra. Watch out for stories, photos and some interviews as the days go by. All I can say right now is "Welcome to the class".

Day 1

Most of the eighteen participants arrived for the first day before the scheduled 9am(something I was personally impressed with, considering how we as Ghanaians deal with appointments). The day was used as an introduction and orientation day for the facilitator and participants alike.

The course has a 60-hour FIBA recommendation and is supposed to teach young people usually under the age of 35 how to coach mini-basketball(kids between 8-12 yrs).

The day started with a prayer by Mr. Prosper Agbleta(coach of Reformers basketball, GABBA secretary and GBBA treasurer) after which participants took turns to introduce themselves. Mr. Lancinet Keita Kabassan then took time to tell his class a bit about himself and the course they are about to take. Coach Lawal Perigrino Brimah, head coach of CEPS and local facilitator for the course then took participants through the course outline.

He made it clear that no real tests are going to be taken at the end of the course but participants will be accessed during the course. Some of the things he will look out for are punctuality, contribution in class and performance of on-court practicals.

Each participant is also to receive a copy of the book "BASKETBALL FOR YOUNG PLAYERS" which is to be used as the textbook for the 8-day course. According to FIBA, the was book written with the help of several experts with various professional backgrounds, including psychology, sports psychology, physical education and law. All of whom have extensive experience working as basketball coaches of young players.

Participants and the facilitator then agreed on the following schedule:

Saturday, 6th November @ Ohene Djan Stadium Media Center, Osu

9am-10:30am-first session
10:30-11:00- break
11:00-12:30- second session
12:30-1:00- break
1:00-2:00-final session

Monday 8th November - Friday 12th November @ Latter Day Saints West Africa HQ, Ridge.

1:00pm-3:30pm -first session(classroom work)
3:30-4:00pm - break
4:00pm - 6:00pm - second session(practicals)

Chairman: Referees to be accessed next season

Accra - The chairman of the GABBA, Mr. Benjamin Baafi, stated at an association meeting held this past Wednesday at Lebanon House that "from next season ,all referees are going to be accessed on a regular basis". He said this has become the case because of the amount of complaint voiced out by players, coaches and fans about bad officiating during this year's 14 team league. He continued to mention during his talk that this has also prompted the association in collaboration with the GBBA to organize a referee training course to serve as a refresher course for existing referees and as an introductory course for new referees to be trained. The new referees will handle the D2 and Junior league to serve as practical training grounds for them, he also mentioned. After the season, the newly trained referees who perform well will be given the opportunity to officiate at the higher level, he added.
