College basketball season is back! This time around basketball fans in Ghana have a Ghanaian player to keep an eye on; University of Connecticut's Amida Brimah. After verbally committing to UConn in January and joining officially in April, the now 7 foot freshman centre has played his first two games for the unbeaten coach Kevin Ollie side.
“What impressed me was his passion. I always said to him a lot ‘you are passionate about your passion.’ He’s just a great kid. He’s still learning the game, but he had some blocks where he didn't even see his person and turned around, got an amazing block. And then you see his energy. Energy is contagious and when I put him in, he just changed the tempo of the game.” said Coach Ollie when asked about Brimah's performance after their first win of the season against Maryland in Brooklyn.
Brimah, who currently comes off the bench behind sophomore Philip Nolan had 5 points(2/2FG and 1/3FT), 3 rebounds and 3 blocks in 15 minutes of play in the game against Maryland. In the game against Yale last night, he had 7 points(3/4FG and 1/2FT), 1 rebound and 7 blocks(of the team's total 13) in 24 minutes.
When asked after the first game if he thinks he can play at this level, Brimah answered saying; "I knew I could play but strength-wise I thought I wasn't ready, but to get better and stronger, in the summer I kept training and played in Pro-ams and when I got more comfortable I felt I could play with the people on this level.."
