Dynasty Basketball Summer League Begins

After a running a great summer camp, Dynasty Basketball is following it with the second edition of their summer league. This year's edition of the summer league started last Saturday at the Lincoln Community School.

The league will run for the next three Saturdays. The first game day had about 20 kids who were put into four different 3x3 teams. The earlier part of the day was used to evaluate the skill levels of the players and to group them into appropriate teams before the league itself got underway.

The league seeks to provide young players who attended the Dynasty summer camp and others from other programs an opportunity to play and improve on the skills they've been taught throughout the year and at the summer camp.

Isaac Kwapong Not Happy with GBBA

Accra - Isaac Robert Kwapong expressed a lot of dissatisfaction with the way the GBBA is being run especially with regard to participation in regional and continental events. He made this known yesterday in a note he posted on the GBBA facebook page which he administers. Isaac also runs Dynasty Basketball and did his national service at the GBBA, during which he helped put the Ghana Basketball score Card (which is available for download) together. The note which drew a lot of interesting comments from fans read:

Since August 2008 when the National U16 Mens team squeezed their way to play in the FIBA Africa Zone 3 U16 2009 Afro Basketball Qualification, there has not been a single national team assignment for Ghana. Why? One reason stands out, lack of finances. Within 2010 Ghana has missed out on three continental events Mens Afrobasket 2011 qualification in August which saw Togo,Nigeria and Cote'Divoire qualify , U18 Womens 2011 Afrobasketball Championships in Egypt held in August and U18 Mens 2011 Afrobasket Championship currently been held in Rwanda. In the first week of November this year there will be the Womens Afrobasket Zone 3 Qualifications for Mali 2011 which will be held in Cote D'ivoire and up to date there has not been now been any confirmation if the Ghanaian contigent who are currently in camp will be in Abidjan come November. What makes this story interesting is that for years if not for a decade none of Ghanaian womens national teams have participated in any continental event.

Some weeks ago we had the chance to chat with the new GBBA Secretary General Mr. Daniel Sarpei at the office of the GBBA at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra. In our short conversation he made known to me that the GBBA had taken all the necessary administrative steps towards the womens qualification in November but it was now left to government to approve and issue the needed financial resources for the trip. The GBBA currently is not able to confirm Ghana's participation because if the association confirms to the organizers in Abidjan and don't show up Ghana will attract a fine by the zone and also from FIBA Afica.Don't forget that it was only this year that all fees owed by the GBBA was waived off by FIBA Africa hence GBBA would like to mentain a clean financial sheet with FIBA Africa going into 2011. The GBBA will be forced to pull out if the financial support from the government doesn't come in time. This is not a new situation facing the GBBA it has been the story of the association for years now. Will Abidjan break the jinx facing the GBBA and the Ghanaian women's National Teams? We will know in the coming days.

Dynasty Talk

Q & A with Isaac Robert Kwapong
Talks a bit about Dynasty, the Ghana basketball scorecard and his Christian faith

After spending close to three hours weaving through traffic from my home in Gbawe(West Accra) to Adenta(some where in the Northwestern part of Accra), I met Isaac at a place they've decided to call Lotto Junction. Then like magic, the talk begun even before we got to his place.

What was supposed to be an interview turned out to be four hours of discussion between two young basketball savvy entrepreneurs. What didn't we talk about? From what's wrong with the game in Ghana, to sharing business concepts, to religion and creating a new friendship at the end of the day.

Isaac went on to talk about his days at Wisconsin University and how the whole Dynasty idea came up. He was somewhat surprised when I told him I've read about his beginning in a blog he posted somewhere in 2008. He kept on talking about how much he thinks what he does is a calling from God, siting instances when he nearly called it quits but somehow still had the conviction to stay true to the course till this day.

We will someday soon most definitely sit to chat about Dynasty as an institution.Dynasty is right now one of the most well structured basketball programs in the country and Isaac hopes that the success with Dynasty will wake the basketball community in Ghana to see that it's possible to make the game work here especially by putting together structures and making sure they are executed. Then we finally managed to go on to the real agenda for the day: The Ghana Basketball business plan(the scoreboard).

Rebound Ghana:In the first place how and when did you get involved with the national association?
Isaac Robert Kwapong:It was in 2005 when I was trying to find out who were in charge of the game in Ghana and if possible to register the Wisconsin Basketball Association that I had started. It was also around that time that I came into contact with Mr.Iddrisu Gamel.

Isaac Robert Kwapong,
the man behind the Dynasty dream!

RGH:What did you help put together for the association
IRK:It was a business plan known as theScorecard by FIBA. it's a long term development plan for the game in Ghana.

RGH:How many people put this whole plan together?

IRK: We were two, me and Mr. Iddrisu Gamel.

RGH:How long did the entire process take?

IRK:It took us somewhere around two months to finish it. You know?, we had the FIBA template which served as a guide for the entire process.

RGH:When did the process take place?

IRK:It was in 2007 when I was still in school but I came back in 2009 to do my national service and worked in various roles as an assistant to the then secretary general and the technical manager.
RGH:What does the the Ghana Scorecard entail?
IRK:basically, it's a 2-6 strategic development plan which involves all aspects of the game. Be it officiating, players, coaches, media ... everything you can think about that involves running a national federation.

RGH:Someone might wonder, why did you bother to even get involved with national association at all?

IRK:The inspiration came from my days at Wisconsin, seeing how much possibility existed in making basketball succeed in Ghana through the little work we did with the school's association.

RGH:Have you seen any part of the Scorecard being implemented in Ghana so far?

IRK:No!

RGH:Why do you think nothing has been achieved so far?

IRK:It's very simple, nobody has focused on it to even try to make it work. All we need to get this work is focus!

RGH:Maybe it's because nobody has heard or knows about it.

IRK:When we finished it we made sure to send copies to all persons involved with basketball in the country. All whom it may concern have copies. All regional associations were sent copies as well. It all still goes down to lack of focus on the plan.

RGH:Thanks so much for all the time and ideas.

IRK:Thanks so much too and it's been a very educational experience...all the best.

Dynasty Talk

Rebound headquarters - As the basketball fanatic I have been since my teenage days, am constantly on the look out for information about the game. On one of such quest for knowledge tours, I bumped into an article on http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/artikel.php?ID=11575" and it read:

The Greater-Accra Basketball Association has planned to build a basketball court at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, in Accra, so says the Greater Accra Basketball Chairman, Mr. P.D. Vanderpuye-Orgle.

Chairman Vanderpuye-Orgle also said equipment for the court is ready, "we are only waiting for the masonry work."

The chairman intimated that the Circle Court will be so central and funds for its construction would be provided by Tropic Oil Limited.

The father of Ghana basketball, Mathias Ocloo who is also secretary of the Greater Accra Basketball, thanked the Lebanese Community for providing and maintaining the Lebanon Club to whip up interest in the game.

He said his association intends to fund the renovation of Flames and Prisons Courts in order to keep the game going.

In another development, Mr. Vanderpuye-Orgle has called on individuals and organisations to help sponsor basketball games in Ghana.

Apart from the Lebanese Community and Latex Foam who sponsor the game, "basketball as a game is virtually shunned, Mr. Vanderpuye-Orgle said.

The Greater Accra Basketball Chairman commended the referees handling the game and appealed to them to appreciate the very little allowance being given to them.

He believes that in the not too-distant future when sponsorship is secured and more courts opened, basketball will occupy its rightful place in Ghana sports.

Back then I couldn't do much but just read and shake my head as I knew this had never been done. But today I find myself in a position where I can ask questions. So I decided to talk to a new found friend in the basketball-popularization-business about some issues of the game in Ghana. Why Isaac Robert Kwapong Jnr? a.k.a coach dynasty...because he runs Dynasty Hoops and once partnered the Ghana Basketball Association to put together a business plan to help develop the game...let's just leave it hear for the real convo...just watch this space.
