Game Day Recap; 18/3
Kingdom Hoops; new team, old faces.

Kingdom Hoops 71, Turbo Jets 53
Kingdom Hoops; new team, old faces. A team of vets from various teams led by Emmanuel Otoo including TY expats Mc Martey and Cyril , Henry(CCH) and Tsatsu(Magic)cruised passed Turbo Jets in the day's opening match amidst too many 3 point attempts. Turbo Jets lost the game in the second quarter which K-Hoops had a 23-4 run.

Tema Youth 30, Lions 44
A-not-so-exciting match if you ask me. Probably because of the "new" TY. With Mc Martey and Clarke now with kingdom Hoops and the Borsah brothers not showing up, Rubberman and his crew are certainly in rebuilding mode. On the other hand to avoid down playing the Lions' effort, who also have lost two of their boys to CCH, it was evident they came into this season with a lot of focus and preparation, going all out and making use of the opportunity to defeat the less fire-powered TY. The Lions kept their game alive with a lot of team effort; most of the time about two guys ended up coming down with the rebound.

CEPS 37, Police 32
Was personally expecting a finer game, just like many of the fans that showed up. Maybe it could be blamed on rustiness caused by a too long off season and also coaching. Both teams came into to the game all fired up but it ended just like it did last year at Lebanon House,Police controlled the game in the first half and then lost the game in the second. Now, this is a summary of the game, Dickson and Zaku did the do for Police, CEPS was out of sync if not for Hashim's all-over-the-place physical play(and he scored quite a bit), Dodzie was 0 of 5 from downtown, you can't forget Darko's blocks and overall good defense by both teams. Tell both teams we wouldn't agree to the argument about the prisons' court being a difficult shooting court, Kingdom Hoops banged 71 on their debut.

Referees Wanted!

Mini Q & A with Referee Gasu
Gh basketball could use a couple more people like this man...trust me!
RGH followed up on the wall post he dropped our facebook page. It read like "Why is everybody shying away from basketball officiating? The Referees' Association badly needs a fresh injection of personnel and commitment!" and drew a couple of interesting suggestions.
This sounded like an urgent call for help from the man who's also the secretary of the referees' association.

So I called up Gasu to further explain what exactly he meant in the post(yea, I know it was as simple as it could be, but who knows, he might have meant more).

He started by describing how he himself got into officiating. "Certain things should have been institutionalized long ago, but as you know, our system is not the best and many of those things do not happen. So for some us when we wanted to be referees, we were taken through training by Mr. Iddrisu Gamel before we were made to start officiating. Along the way through our own initiative and interest in acquisition of more knowledge about the game we regularly read material from the internet and other sources."

When asked if he made the statement because of any impending referee course, he responded by saying that it was a personal initiative; which he knows his chairman will applaud. He went on to say that any interested person should apply to the referees association and he will personally aid the person through all processes that are required to make one a part of them. "We need new guys to inject some sought of competition among the refs, so that it becomes like it's done in soccer and other sports, if you do not perform well as a referee, you are not given any games to officiate. There's a lot of complacency among the refs because they realize there are no other options but them".

If interested why don't you pick a phone and call referee Gasu on 024 3835148 or find him on facebook as http://www.facebook.com/#!/bquarmyne or follow the refs on http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Basketball-Referees-Ghana/215237911848598

Venue is the Aviation Social Centre, and the time is 8am. What 's happening is the final games of this year's Milo Junior Ball, one of the competitions organized annually by Rite Multimedia meant for basic and junior high school kids.

One school each represents the Central and Eastern regions, with 6 schools from the Greater Accra region all vying for that one spot won by the HCI who represented the Central region last year.

Here's a list of the competing schools you could use;

Central region - Catholic Jubilee JHS
Eastern region - Anglican JHS
Accra - Air force base basic school, Kotoka Preparatory, Gliss, Ridge Church school, Calvary School and St. Joseph's school.

With no league matches tomorrow, let's all make some time and pass through, show our support for the youth game and see what the future of Ghana Basketball looks like...
