Isaac Kwapong Not Happy with GBBA

Accra - Isaac Robert Kwapong expressed a lot of dissatisfaction with the way the GBBA is being run especially with regard to participation in regional and continental events. He made this known yesterday in a note he posted on the GBBA facebook page which he administers. Isaac also runs Dynasty Basketball and did his national service at the GBBA, during which he helped put the Ghana Basketball score Card (which is available for download) together. The note which drew a lot of interesting comments from fans read:

Since August 2008 when the National U16 Mens team squeezed their way to play in the FIBA Africa Zone 3 U16 2009 Afro Basketball Qualification, there has not been a single national team assignment for Ghana. Why? One reason stands out, lack of finances. Within 2010 Ghana has missed out on three continental events Mens Afrobasket 2011 qualification in August which saw Togo,Nigeria and Cote'Divoire qualify , U18 Womens 2011 Afrobasketball Championships in Egypt held in August and U18 Mens 2011 Afrobasket Championship currently been held in Rwanda. In the first week of November this year there will be the Womens Afrobasket Zone 3 Qualifications for Mali 2011 which will be held in Cote D'ivoire and up to date there has not been now been any confirmation if the Ghanaian contigent who are currently in camp will be in Abidjan come November. What makes this story interesting is that for years if not for a decade none of Ghanaian womens national teams have participated in any continental event.

Some weeks ago we had the chance to chat with the new GBBA Secretary General Mr. Daniel Sarpei at the office of the GBBA at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra. In our short conversation he made known to me that the GBBA had taken all the necessary administrative steps towards the womens qualification in November but it was now left to government to approve and issue the needed financial resources for the trip. The GBBA currently is not able to confirm Ghana's participation because if the association confirms to the organizers in Abidjan and don't show up Ghana will attract a fine by the zone and also from FIBA Afica.Don't forget that it was only this year that all fees owed by the GBBA was waived off by FIBA Africa hence GBBA would like to mentain a clean financial sheet with FIBA Africa going into 2011. The GBBA will be forced to pull out if the financial support from the government doesn't come in time. This is not a new situation facing the GBBA it has been the story of the association for years now. Will Abidjan break the jinx facing the GBBA and the Ghanaian women's National Teams? We will know in the coming days.

  1. Massa.. Im glad someone is now shouting disappointment !! Since our last all afrca games qualifiers in 2003, no senior men's game even a friendly has been organised.. And the per diems from that 2003 tourney is still outstanding.. at 240dollars per player.. And basketball has the 2nd largest budget at the sports council after obviously, soccer. They never got money to send the players out...then they ask why the kids dont have anymore interest in the game.. Morons !
